Back to the Query Trenches — Stronger, Wiser, and Still Fighting
I want to talk about something a lot of writers gloss over: what happens after a full request doesn’t pan out.
For months, I poured my heart into my manuscript, hit “send,” and watched one of my dream agents request the full. That moment felt electric — like maybe, finally, all the late nights and self-doubt were leading somewhere. But then came silence. Then the pass.
And if I’m being honest? It stung. I didn’t want to open my laptop, didn’t want to write, didn’t even want to talk about querying. So I took a break — from everything. From social media, from the blog, from chasing inbox notifications that made my stomach twist.
Sometimes we treat perseverance like a race, like you have to bounce back immediately or you’ll lose momentum. But here’s what I learned: you don’t have to rush to get back up. You can sit in the quiet for a while. You can let the disappointment breathe, and you can heal at your own pace.
And when you’re ready — you will get back up.
That’s where I am now. Wiser. Sharper. Still a little bruised, but stronger than before. I’m querying again with fresh energy, a refined story, and a clearer sense of who I am as a writer.
So if you’ve been knocked down, if the inbox feels too heavy to open, remember this: rest if you need to, but don’t quit. Your story still deserves its shot.
The fight doesn’t end with a no — sometimes, that’s where it really begins.
